If it's ADSL Max, upload should max out at 448kbps and be above 288kbps, then that's controlled by the BT equipment at the exchange. Your upload varying may indicate some sort of signal problem on the line though. What do your line stats show?

Well I do not know why setting PPPoe should provide the reported increases in speed. The BT ATM data backbone network is set to operate on PPPoa (Point to Point over ATM). The livebox by default is also set for PPPoa.

Its not varying, its stayed at 96 since yesterday when I noticed it.

Edit: It doesn't matter anymore, its back to what it should be, just unpluging the bugger and back on again seemed to sort it out.
