hello all, ive been running a 3 moblie broadband dongle for some time which has become progresivly slower to point which i'd like to smash it.
just had delivery of my Orange dongle which i took out when renewing my phone contract, was expecting some improvement but when used down stairs in my house it is still hard to get more than one bar in gprs, up stairs is ok,but very directional.
now, 3 do a wireless router thing for there dongle to plug in to , is there any thing else available that will allow me to put the dongle where it can get a good signal away from my lap top ??
i think this will be getting sent back as is crap a 3 , begin to suffer now that more than 2 people in the area are logged in.
even though it shows a reasonable signal the down load speed sticks at zero before being booted off with a not conected error , rubish absolute rubish

Your probably finding that your connection is crap because your using it indoors, its called mobile broadband for a reason!
Connection speed is entirely dependant on signal strength, and whilst indoors you're guaranteed to not have a full signal. A mobile dongle is no substitute for a fixed line connection, which will always be better indoors than mobile broadband, regardless of which provider you are with.
you usless tosser, ive been all round my house an in the garden front and back, the only place that is any good is upstairs front, i suspect on a ladder outside at the front may be better , but im not as stupid as you to try it.

i'm back on 3 now as compaired to Orange its now looks fast,
the max speed i saw on Orange was 180 kbps,
with 3 in the day time 2000 kpbs can be acheived,evening times will slow down to a few hundred, but still faster than Orange.
just incases there are any more smart arses out there , i can not get cable, and the land line is poor, 512k max

I was trying to offer some helpful advice as to why you may have been experiencing issues but I see that you're far too tech savvy to listen to sound technical reasoning, let alone post a request for help on a forum. And no, you won't see me sat on top of my roof trying to get a signal as I am sat in the comforts of my own home enjoying the many benefits of cable. That and i'm not as stupid as some for moaning about slow speeds when using a mobile technology in the complete opposite way it is designed for.

My response was not intended to insult you, for that I am sorry. I was pointing out the obvious, which by the sound of your first post, you were not ware of.
And yes I do use my mobile indoors but I'm not stupid enough to complain when the signal drops, because its a MOBILE technology.
You say the landline is poor at 512kbps and there's no cable so it seems you possibly live out in the countryside somewhere. If your normal mobile phone has a problem with signal strength then almost certainly the mobile BB will suffer similarly.
My mobile phone signal is poor inside my house, which has 18" thick stone walls, even though there's a mast <1Km from me but I step outside and I get max. signal bars.
Mobile BB may be your best option but any BB connection has its own failings, you only need to scan the various BB forums and read the range of complaints/problems to see that neither cable, LLU nor IPStream are perfect.
no, i live on a realative newish big housing estate, the trouble is our road and surounding area is unadopted still,meaning it has never been dug up for any form of ground work, my mobile phone signal is fine in most areas of the house,i was wondering if the nearest bb transmiter/reciever is over subscribed being as most people in this area will be in the same boat,cant explain why my phone is ok though,

I believe that your mobile phone doesn't necessarily connect with the same mast as for mobile BB.
Not all masts have been upgraded for BB so your phone may be connecting to a mast 1Km from your house but the BB may be connecting to a mast 5Km away.
Also high ground, tall structures and weather conditions can affect the signal and the greater the distance from you to mast the greater the possibility of interference.
hi all i have been with Orange 6 years and have never stumbled across such abizmal service or custumer service i recently took out Orange broadband with a lap top in febuary and had problems almost straight away i complained to Orange and they told me there was a mast down in my area and to hang on and wait to see if it improved as they made a point about having sublime signal in my area to which i did keep hold of it on oranges advice when i rang up 2 weeks later at there request i discovered there was no notes of my conversation and that actually the b****** had lied to me there was never even a mast that had gone down this was the first of many problems Orange called me a liar and have also told to use my dongal 10 miles up the road if i coud get signal up there i wa also called stupid for signing up and this is no longer oranges problem instead of doing the decent thing and dissconnecting me for free they want to rape for 600 further pound for a service i cannot even use i have no signal wherei am to the last person i spoke i was thick beacuse if my phone works my internet does and even if i could only use it for 1 minute of the day they have forfilled tere part of the deal the b****** have got my money thats all there intgerested in at this present i would not reccomend Orange to any one and have also gone to watch dog in bbc so one way or the other i will get disconnected for free from my dongal can anyone help
