Don't get confused re. tweaking the Target SNR.
If 0range's DLM operates in a similar way to other DLMs then at the DSLAM in the exchange the SNR is still set to 10dB.
It's only at your router that the SNR is reduced to 6dB or whatever.
So to all intents and purposes 0range can't see that 6dB, they only see 10dB.
If you're right then that's good as they won't know (or care?) what we're doing so won't do anything about it but we still get the benefit of the extra speeds. Result
Quick update.
Been running my tweaked router at 14 meg download, 1.2 meg upload for a few months now.
Been fine all day today as per usual
Logged on late evening, very slow connection at a crawl!
Rebooted router as it was becoming impossible to load web pages!
Set the tweak on the router at 100%.
Now the web is working although not as fast, latest stats are:
Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 1276 Kbps, Downstream rate = 8897 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: ADSL2+
Channel: Fast
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 12.6 7.0
Attn(dB): 35.5 18.4
Pwr(dBm): 19.1 12.4
Max(Kbps): 12655 1288
Rate (Kbps): 8897 1276
Switched router on this morning and it was back to 14meg.
However just had a resync:
Channel: FAST, Upstream rate = 1248 Kbps, Downstream rate = 10175 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: ADSL2+
Channel: Fast
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 10.4 6.9
Attn(dB): 35.0 18.3
Pwr(dBm): 18.9 12.4
Max(Kbps): 15177 1261
Rate (Kbps): 10175 1248
So an improvement over the figures Orange had me on last night.
But I cannot understand why this is happening after months of steady 14meg download speeds with no resyncs at all in this period.
If I reboot my router I can get back to 14 meg as the tweak is stored but as soon as I do this, I can a resync and back down to 10 meg.
After being moved down from Orange LLU to a BTIPStream, I have now moved onto Sky broadband and am currently waiting for the DLM to work its magic.
Current stats on Day 1 are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 510 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.0 dB 20.1 dB
Noise Margin 15.7 dB 22.5 dB
After finding out that the Sky llu was actually in fact an easynet LLU and that the broadcom router Sky supplied would be better served by a conexant router, I purchased the Billion 7402NX router.
However my speeds were capped at 12.25 meg down and 1 meg up after the 10 day training period due to me using the Sky sagem router during that time.
When I connected up the Billion router I was still capped, so contacted Sky and straight away they tested my line and consequently upped my speeds and the speeds have remained like this over the last few days without any problems:
Upstream 1118732
Downstream 15166220
SNR Margin(Upstream) 7.5 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 7.15 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 17.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 38.0 dB
These figures are untweaked. With Orange I was just under 14 meg on a 6dB (tweaked) for my download speed. With Sky and of course a compatible conexant router, I am pushing 15 meg down.
Try the billion 7800N if you have a broadcom LLU, which I think you said you have. For easynet, i.e. connexant, the billion 7402NX is highly recommended.
