Do It as sweeperdog said get your MAC give it to o2 (now Sky) and when your line is activated with o2 (now Sky) and your up and running ring Orange and cancel your account, that way you won't have any downtime or at the most an hour, if you cancel before hand o2 (now Sky) will not accept your MAC.
Do not cancel your Orange broadband until the migration is complete.
When you get the router from o2 (now Sky) you don't have to use the cd if you don't want to if you connect the router up it will already be configured for o2 (now Sky) network and will connect ok, to get into the router you can just type in the browser address bar 192.168.1.254.
Ok Steve i will do it exactly like that & then just plug the router in & go!
See i thought of the CD/router as one meaning you have to install the cd/software to install the router & also set up & connect other wireless devices like other pc's/xbox's, maybe not then. So out of interest what does this cd do?
The CD is a matter of personal preference. The router will connect without it, just as many people recommend not using the livebox CD too, there is no need for the o2 (now Sky) box one either
Re sign up - I think I was offered 2 packages (not the 20MB package) and just chose the 16MB package. I was initially only synching at 4.4 MB and after a month I got an email from them saying they were disappointed with my synch speed and encouraged me to call to discuss my options. I took the plunge and disconnected the Orange ring wire from my socket to get the 11MB synch speed
If you scout this forum people have been given invalid MAC codes from Orange. The only benefit you will get by cancelling early is saving a few few quid and in my opinion it's not worth it. Using your MAC code is an authority which allows BT to cease (orange) and provide (new service) at the same time.
Ordering the MAC code doesn't start the cease process

AdamF - Do keep us up to date if you migrate to o2 (now Sky) and let us know how it goes and any differences in your broadband service. Feedback, as you have seen, is incredibly helpful to all our users. Best of luck!
4. Receive router package from o2 (now Sky) but DO NOT install router or cd from o2 (now Sky) just yet
5. Countinue to use the poor service from Orange until activation email or text arrives from o2 (now Sky) to say the account/line is ready.
6. When activation message arrives from o2 (now Sky) call Orange for the LAST TIME (i never thought that day would come) & give 30days notice to cancel account.
7. Unplug my belkin router from PC
8. Smile like a kid at christmas & open the o2 (now Sky) starter pack with shaking hands & install new router/cd
9. Enjoy new broaband & decent customer support with o2 (now Sky)
10. Come back here & let you guys know how i got on & help others move from the crap provider that be Orange!
lol amusing.
You said you use a Belkin Router, i know the
Belkin 7633 and N1 is compatible with o2 (now Sky)/Be.

Just thought id give you all a little update. Orange called today like i asked them to later in the week to let them know my decision on wether to upgrade or not. Quite funny really as they soon phone you back when they want your money & give you an english speaking person but if there was a problem i bet this wouldn't have happened.
Anyway, i told the woman on the phone i was considering moving to another ISP & she asked me who & how much. I mentioned i was looking at a 20MB package for £15 with o2 (now Sky) as its cheaper as i have a phone contract with them. She then proceeded to tell me a would not be getting 20MB (well obviously) she told me my line can only support 5.5mb (funny you tell me this now & not when you was trying to sell me your 8mb package, nice one!). I asked her how she knew this & she told me she checked my line on the BT site. Cut along story short i told her i will probably be requesting my MAC code within the next couple of days & thanked her for her help.
So this got me thinking & thought i would check out this BT site myself to see what my line can handle http://www.productsandservices...ndorid=SE9 after entering my phone number i got the following message:
Quote:
"Broadband checker results
For Postcode 01895****** on Exchange UXBRIDGE
We've just tested your line and can confirm your line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum download speed to be 5.5 Mbps (Megabits per second).
Download speeds are dependent on a number of factors, such as the distance between your telephone exchange to your house and how many people are using broadband at the same time so whilst your broadband speed can vary, BT Total Broadband will always give you the maximum download speed available based on these factors."
Does this mean i will not be getting the speeds i would of been expecting if i went with the 20MB o2 (now Sky) package?

If you go HERE look in your router to see what your Downstream Attenuation is put it in and it will give you an estimated idea of what speed you can expect on ADSL2+ with o2 (now Sky).

I've had a look at my routers page but can not find out my Downstream Attenuation. According to this link i don't think my belkin router allows this: http://www.dslzoneuk.net/forum...amp;t=6625

I think its the router, i know someone who had the same router and it was a pain in the bum he replaced it with a netgear.
If i was you i would ring o2 (now Sky) and ask them to estimate what your line is capable of so that you choose the right package, so say if you take the up to 16 megs if it turns out your line is capable of more/less then you can swap to the appropriate package.
As the figures Orange quoted to you and what was on the test you did was for ADSL not ADSL2+.

Ok thanks very much i will do just that tomorrow.
Damn your quick at replying im definatly going to have to upgrade to a faster broadband package just to keep up with you!
I told the woman I'd be going from Orange's LLU kit to "another LLU provider" (i.e. different kit, not BT owned etc) and explained my Orange speed would therefore be no reflection on what I'd get with another LLU provider. She said "I guess you know what you're talking about" and stopped trying to give me the hard sell. Also ADSL2+ is a different kettle of fish to ADSL2 - 5.5 out of a possible 8MB is quite respectable, but the higher frequency ADSL2+ uses means you will go even faster
Also she insisted that she needed to know where I was going and I told her it was none of her business. She still insisted on knowing, so I said I had 3 on my shortlist, and I would make my mind up within 30 days

So if i switched to o2 (now Sky) thats what i would be doing then, changing to another LLU provider/different kit? So what she told me about only being able to get 5.5MB maximum is pretty much a load of you know what....
What is the difference between ADSL, ADSL2 & ADSL+2? Obviously the speed but what does it involve & how is it done exactly?
Cheers mate, thats cleared a few things up. So it looks like the only way i will really find out is to like you say actually phone o2 (now Sky) & see what they suggest.
