The following phones all gave the 5 beeps before getting a dial tone.
1st phone tried: Analogue. Wouldn't accept incoming calls. They went straight to voicemail. Couldn't make outgoing calls or call voicemail!
2nd phone: Analogue. Same as above.
3rd phone: Analogue. This one accepted calls but couldn't make them or get to voicemail.
4th phone: DECT digital cordless. It works 100% and actually sounds better through the Livebox than on the regular phone line! For the record, it's a cheap Binatone MD-1500 (probably discontinued now). Therefore it needn't necessarily be an analogue phone after all.
I still had problems putting one of the existing phones back into the normal line (with an ADSL filter) as they sound hissy, so I'll need a new one for it now but the problem is solved. So when someone says, "Try different phones", it's worth it.
