Wanadoo reckon it wont make a difference if I switch ISP's as the problem Im having with my connection now is with LLU and that this will just be carried over to my new ISP. I know it sounds like the obvious but the last thing I want is to be sent to the back of this LLU queue?
I figure if I join BT - its there line - I cant go wrong? can I?
If you're on LLU the problem could carry over but if it only started since you went to LLU then it probably won't, depends exactly where the fault is however.
Well it's true that it's BT's line but they're supposed to have equal access to the same systems as any ISP that uses their network.
The problem is with LLU, this is Oranges bit of c**p equipment in the exchange , it belongs to Orange not BT, AND NO ONE ELSE!
A simple explanation of LLU is that previously Orange used BT's equipment in the exchange to provide a broadband service and they had to pay BT for all of this.
Now LLU allows them ( and any other ISP ) to basicaly put their equipment in the exchange, rent the 'shelf space and line only' from BT, to reduce Oranges costs and to increase Oranges profit!
If you go with BT, Oranges Broadband equipment will be disconnected from your line (easiest way to describe it), and BT will connect their Broadband equipment to your line.

Is this equally true if you transfer using a MAC code rather than 'cease & provide'?

The MAC code route is a little different, If it's LLU then the equipment still has to be disconnected and the new providers put on if the problem's not with the line then that should fix it, however if it's through BT then very little changes, it can fix problems but equally they can be exactly the same. I've seen customers migrate to Orange because of problems and get exactly the same ones. As I said before it depends where exactly the fault turns out to be.
The only thing the cease and reprovide will do is ensure that your line is mapped along a new route
You can call BT and request a Winback to BT from the OLO and get you service through them or equally just contact another ISP to get you servcie from them
As noted above onve you shift to another ISP you will be disconnected from teh OLO kit and this will be done by Openreach in teh exchange and you will be conected to your new ISP
If there is a fault with the line quality this will normally be picked up
Easy way to do this is if you get PSTN from BT call tehm and ask them to test teh line and confirm it is in spec
