My (inexpert) neighbour's Livebox doesn't appear to be behaving correctly, and I wondered if it needs a firmware upgrade. The current version is v5.08.2-uk, and its 'status' is 'reduced'.
I've seen talk of v5.10.7-uk, but attempting to force an upgrade just reports that the firmware is 'up to date'. Is this box's firmware lagging behind?
I've also tried some power-cycling voodoo (switch off for a minute Three times, then leave for 24 hours), but that's accomplished nothing.
Any way to force the firmware in? Is a factory reset warranted? Or even a full recovery like this?

This is still a problem. I've only just discovered the installation disc with its recovery procedure. I'd like to give it a go, but it would be resetting to quite an old version, and I suspect there've been no updates since I last posted.
Can anyone confirm that the update service is still running?
The latest firmware may depend on whether it's Livebox 1 or Livebox mini 1.2, but both of those you quote are up to date. I've been with Orange since 2007 and there's only been one firmware update made in early 2008 (for TV which was never introduced). However when I thought my Livebox was playing up, I sent them an e-mail via their website (broadband help), stating I'd done their recommended checks without success, and received a free replacement within 2 working days. If you've done the same, it's a better option for your neighbour. The Livebox is not very customisable. A factory reset looses settings (including logins which need re-entry) but does not alter the firmware.
Some people are finding their speeds are going haywire following a change Orange are making from their own LLU to BT's WBC, but this should settle down.

I nearly did that, but the mangled web interface was obstructive.

I found the courage to try a factory reset today; wanted to be sure the credentials I had were correct first by trying them in another router. Didn't have a spare one until now.
I'm pleased to report that this reset got the box out of its "reduced" firmware status (now "full"), and it has updated to 5.08.3.
Two things have improved. First, the wireless is now using WPA — it was previously refusing to use any encryption, despite its setting. Second, the USB port has recognised the printer, though I haven't actually managed to print through it yet. At least it's progress!
