Have been with Freeserve, Wanadoo, Orange for many years. Always had pretty good download speeds - best being about 6. 5Mbps, but typically around 3.0. Never had any reason to change. So when Orange phone and say that they can offer me a lower cost deal because I don't use the VOIP service, the first thing I ask is "will my download speed be affected?" I am told "No, nothing will change". I ask this question several times and receive the same answer. So I agree. Now I am locked into an 18 month contract. I have run several speed tests using different sites over the past few days. Now I am getting between 1.0 and 2.0 Mbps. The test just now, which I ran 3 times, gave me 0.6 Mbps twice and 2.0 Mbps once. What the hell has happened? I know my max is about 6.5 Mbps so I don't expect to get 20 Mbps, but surely to goodness 2 Mbps is taking the Mick!!

It took me 4 weeks to stabilise at good speeds with this service & for many others it's been very much more. See the "Downgraded...." thread which has been going for most of this year.

What seems to be happening is that 0range sell the 20meg Home Select pack - which I have - but if their equipment is not in your exchange then they carry on with the sale but put you on an 8meg package using BT's equipment without actually explaining the implications.
Your max speed will be 8meg down & 448kbps up & suffer severe congestion at peak times. This seems to be the case for you.
Put your postcode or phone no. into this link http://www.samknows.com/broadb...nge_search and post back the exchange code. Just checked Paignton which I think is your exchange & 0range's equipment is in place so this is strange, maybe they're full or just haven't switched you over.
I'm on the true 20meg package & with a similar attenuation I sync at 14.5meg down & 1meg up.
Download speedachieved during the test was - 4567 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

Unfortunately there's really nothing you can do as the problem is congestion, partly because 0range , like many other ISPs using BT wholesale , don't/won't buy enough capacity from BT to provide decent download speeds at peak times. o2 (now Sky) users on the same basis have been severely affected recently - one reason I left them.
You connection is fine it's just the congestion causing the problem.

Surely that would be regarded as mis-selling, therefore against the law ?

I agree but if you read Crinkmeister's original post carefully, it does seem to indicate that he believed that the connection was to be an up to 20meg one therefore an ADSL2+ connection.

I knew I was only ever going to get about 7Mbps max, but I did not know that the speed was going to fall below 1 Mbps. I guess it was going to be crêpe whatever package Orange got me on. The annoying thing is that I am stuck on 18 months of this rubbish with no opportunity to go elsewhere - but where else could I go?
