Hi all
thanks to the excellent Bramley apple tutoriali know have my imac on the net with my live box using the airport card. I would really appreciate some further advice if at all possible.
My 2 daughters have older emacs and they want the net too. I have bought a couple of these, safecom SWMULZ-5400
which are supposedly MAC compatible
installed the software and tried to follow the pdf which was written for an earlier version of the software and does not seem to be that helpful
anyway now have the WLAN software installed. when launched it sees the livebox but refuses to connect
I have turned off all security on the livebox but still no use.
the WLAN software has various options and i have played with most configurations to no avail:
type: there are 2 choices, infrastructure (no Joy) or ad-hoc, (this setting allows me to connect to something as I get a link status and signal strength indicator both look healthy)
there are 4 encryption settings, WEP, Disabled, TKIP and AES, I have set it too disabled, and authentication is set to open?
my problem seems to be in system prefs on the MAC in "Network" in "network status"
in the supplied PDF it shows "Airport" and "Etehernet adaptor (en1), i only have the ethernet adaptor. the button next to it is Yellow and it says " Ethernet adaptor (en1) is currently active it has a self assigned IP adress and may not be able to connect to the internet.
consequently no connection with safari etc. all macs or on 10.4.6 by the way
if anyone can throw any light on this situation it would be great
have a merry christmas

Look in the available network list for your livebox, it's name should be at the bottom of the sticker on it if you're not sure, double click it.
If it asks about using a previous setting select no.
The more settings for your livebox should show it set to infrastructure and ecryption is on.
It doesn't mention WPA, what did you set the livebox security to from the Bramley Apple guide? If it was WPA only then try and enter the WEP key, make sure the livebox is in pairing mode (press the 1 button) andsee if it'll let you connect.
Otherwise if it's on WEP only you'll need to go the WEP key settings and set it to, 128bit, default #1, hexadecimal, enter the key into the first box. Hopefully you'll then get connected. If not try changing the livebox encryption down to WEP only.
Pairing mode just adds any devices providing the correct key to the MAC address filtering list, if a device connects once it should be able to connect at anytime with the correct key unless the livebox is factory reset.
Could be something interfering with the signal, if you log into the livebox and go into the security > wireless connection part you can change the channel it's using to try and find a better frequency.
had another go at this
now the emac will connect using infrastructure, now that all security is off on the live box however it only works whilst the pairing light is flashing, once it stops the connection drops, I notice in the advanced settings you can set pairing to stay on indefinitely, when i do this i can keep the connection open longer. does it matter if the bo0x is in pairing mode all the time??
Also although i have a reasonable strength and link signal at the emac end and sys prefs/network tells me I have a green light , safari just stops every now and then and refuses to link to a page????

If you've turned off the wireless security and have indefinite pairing mode then your livebox is completely open to anyone who wants to try and connect to it. It's really not a good state to have it in!
With wireless security on then indefinite pairing mode isn't the best idea but it doesn't matter quite as much as someone trying to connect still needs to find the key first.
Hard to say why it keeps dropping the connection, could be the adapter or livebox itself causing that.
I ive in the middle of nowhere so no likelihood of anyone hacking in, got a different usb wifi adaptor and the same thing happens, looks like its either spend some money and get apple airport cards, (around £70 on ebay, old macs so can't use airport extreme) or use some cable and wire them in.
on another front is it usual for the box to lose its connection several times a day? several times this morning the lights all started flashing and the connection dri opped out
I unplugged the livebox and it did the trick a couple of times, eventually it came back of its own accord
could become annoying if using the telephone
